This guide outlines how to confirm your sign’s firmware version, download the latest build, and safely complete the update.
IMPORTANT:
Only update firmware when advised by TraffiCalm Technical Support or when troubleshooting known issues.
Installing the wrong version may cause communication or functionality loss.

Identify Your Sign Model
Determine your display size (9″, 12″, 14″, 15″, or 18″) and LED configuration (Avago US, Canadian Default, or Universal).
This ensures you select the correct firmware.
Ensure Stable Power
Connect the sign to a reliable power source before starting the update.
Interruptions during flashing can corrupt the controller.
Back Up Configuration (if applicable)
If using SafetyCalm DFB Config or similar, save your current setup before updating.
Unzip the Firmware Package
Extract the downloaded .zip file to a convenient location on your computer.
NOTE: Confirm with TraffiCalm Technical Support that you’re using the correct file before updating.
Launch the DFB Bootloader Tool included with your sign’s software.
Connect your sign to the computer via USB or serial cable.
Select the correct COM Port (e.g., COM5).
Click Browse and locate the .hex file from the unzipped folder.
Power-cycle the sign — turn it off, wait 3-5 seconds, then turn it on.
Click Program to begin flashing. A progress bar will appear.
When complete, the message “Programming Successful” will display and the sign will automatically reboot.
If the update fails or the bootloader cannot communicate:
Verify the COM Port.
Check cable connection and power source.
Retry the process.
If problems persist, contact Technical Support.
After rebooting:
Open SafetyCalm DFB Config (or equivalent configuration tool).
Connect to the sign and confirm the firmware version in About → System Info.
Verify it matches the new build you installed.
