Overview
TraffiCalm® manufactures its own rugged Smart Radar Detector as a cost-effective option to add to Flashing Sign Systems, making the LED flashers on the signs “vehicle activated.” This reduces power consumption and increases impact by activating the flashers only when a vehicle approaches, eliminating unnecessary flashing when no cars are passing.

Installation Guide

Step 1: Planning

  • Clear View: Ensure the radar has a clear, unobstructed view of the roadway.
  • Avoid Obstructions: Place the radar away from large signs or objects that could block its view.
  • Radar Aim: Ensure the radar can rotate on its bracket’s axes for optimal accuracy.

Step 2: Mounting

  • Assembly: The Radar Detector ships as a complete assembly.
  • Height Advantage: Mount the assembly as high on the post as possible using the articulating bracket.
  • Materials: Use bolts or bands (banding material not supplied, adapter brackets included in the 012-SA300-0KIT ship kit).

Step 3: Aiming

  • Positioning: Aim the radar face flat and level to traffic using the two-axis bracket.
  • Refined Detection: For specific lanes or entry points, aim the radar downward and toward the middle of the street.
  • Detection Range: Imagine a 30⁰ cone emitting from the radar face; adjust height and angle accordingly.

Step 4: Connection

  • Wiring Harness: The radar has 4 color-coded wires enclosed in a UV-rated outdoor cable harness.
  • Connection: Connect according to the wiring diagram that applies to this configuration.
  • Power On: Connect the radar before powering on the system to unlock configuration settings.
  • Cable Management: Create a drip loop in the cable and trim or stow excess cabling after testing.

Step 5: Refining Aim

  • Indicators: The radar will flash green (power) and red (detection) LEDs once connected and powered on.
  • Adjustment: Use the red LED to refine the radar's aim as you adjust it across its axes.

Step 6: Securing

  • Tighten Fasteners: Ensure all fasteners are sufficiently tightened to maintain aiming accuracy even in inclement weather.
