Flashing Sign and LED Ring System Setup Guide

Flashing Sign and LED Ring System Installation Guide

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing a basic flashing LED sign system. This system, typically applied to stop signs, can also be used to enhance the visibility of a variety of signs such as rail crossing, stop ahead, and yield signs. Powered by our Basic Solar Engine (CTL2/CTL3), this system features plug-and-play installation with radar as an optional component.

Components:

  1. LED Sign Ring
  2. Basic Solar Engine (CTL2/CTL3)
  3. Smart Radar (optional)

Mounting Provisions

Our components are designed to be mounted on various industry-standard roadway infrastructures, including round posts of any size, drilled square posts, wooden posts, pedestal poles, street lights, and flat walls. Additional hardware and creativity may be needed for specific installations.

Installing the LED Sign Ring

Applies to: All LED sign ring appliques (excludes Chevrons and Rail Crossing)

LED Sign Rings provide unmistakable warnings to approaching drivers. They are designed for various signs, including stop, warning, speed, school zone, pedestrian crossing, and more. The LED sign ring is quick to apply and compatible with any Controller or Collaborator.

Option 1: VHB Tape Application

  1. Prep the LED Ring:

    • Expose approximately 2 inches of adhesive at the end of each run.
    • Crease the red masking to stick out past the ring edge.
  2. Treat the Mounting Surface:

    • Clean the sign surface with the supplied alcohol wipe.
    • Apply the tube of 3M Primer 94 to the surface where the ring will be applied.
  3. Align the Ring:

    • Line up the ring with the sign. VHB tape is very sticky, so be intentional.
    • Gently press the corners of the ring to the sign surface.
  4. Apply the Ring:

    • Pull one edge of the red masking at a time, progressing around the ring while applying pressure and ensuring the ring is centered.

Option 2: Self-Tapping Screws

  1. Locate Mounting Holes:

    • Clear reflective sheeting from the mounting holes if necessary.
  2. Apply VHB Tape (Optional):

    • Expose a few small sections of VHB tape to hold the ring in place while applying screws.
  3. Secure the Ring:

    • Use a power drill with a Phillips bit to carefully screw the ring to the sign face.
  4. Finish:

    • Exposed screws at the back of the sign can be replaced with correctly sized rivets (not supplied) for a cleaner look.

Installing the Sign on the Post

  1. Bolt the Sign:
    • Mount the sign to the post as you would with any other sign.
  2. Manage the Cable:
    • Create a drip loop in the cable to prevent water ingress.
    • Trim or stow excess cabling after all components have been assembled and tested.

Installing the Smart Radar (Optional)

  1. Mount the Radar:

    • Attach the radar unit to the desired location on the post.
    • Ensure it is positioned to detect approaching vehicles effectively.
  2. Connect the Radar:

    • Wire the radar unit to the controller or directly to the power source as required.
    • Ensure all connections are secure and weatherproof.
